Alhambra is a city of charming, well-manicured residential neighborhoods and growing number of businesses. Educational, medical and transportation services abound and there are numerous attractive destinations to shop, dine and be entertained locally. Many recreational and sporting venues are also in the area.
It is also home to the University of Southern California’s Health Sciences Alhambra campus, site of the university’s Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research (IPR).
Founded in 1903, Alhambra is named after Washington Irving’s book Tales of the Alhambra.
The city is located in the western San Gabriel Valley approximately eight miles from the Downtown Los Angeles civic center. It is bordered by South Pasadena on the northwest, San Marino on the north, San Gabriel on the east, Rosemead on the southeast, Monterey Park on the south, and the Los Angeles districts of Monterey Hillsand El Sereno on the west.
Alhambra is a very “senior-friendly” community. The city’s Department of Community Services Senior Division offers a wide variety of programs and activities for adults age 60 and over, including recreation, social services, nutrition, and transportation.
As a designated Focal Point by the Los Angeles County Area Agency on Aging for the Southwest San Gabriel Valley Community Services Area, the Center also serves as a central access point for information and services to assist senior citizens and their family members.
