Florida Communities

“The Sunshine State”

Florida is located in the southeast United States.  It is a peninsula – water surrounds the state on three of four possible sides.  To the west is the Gulf of Mexico, to the south is the Florida Straits, and to the east is the Atlantic Ocean.

Tallahassee is the state’s capital found in the part of Florida called the panhandle, or the narrow part.  Jacksonville is its largest city.  There are other big cities in Florida, including Tampa, Orlando and Miami.  Orlando is home to many amusement and theme parks, like Walt Disney World Resort, Sea World, Epcot Center and Universal Studios.  There is also Busch Gardens in Tampa.  Destin is another very popular tourist attraction.

Called the Sunshine State for its warm climate, temperatures may rise up to as high as 109 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer.  The average temperature is much warmer than many of the other states, but during winter, temperatures may occasionally fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.  Florida has two seasons – rainy and dry.

Florida’s sunny climate is very popular with visitors and residents.  The summer is great for surfing the waves and enjoying the hundreds of miles of beaches and shade under the palm trees.  The most popular sport in Florida is fishing.

Retiring in Florida

People retire to Florida for two main reasons:  fantastic year-round weather and a slower pace of life.  In addition, Florida is consistently ranked among the states with the lowest tax rate making it a haven for retirees (as well as businesses).   Another thing that attracts many people to Florida is that there is no state income tax.  Any income that you plan to pull in from investments, pensions, or a second career during your retirement will only be taxed at the federal rate, which means more money for you in the end.

Florida has a wide array of retirement communities from which to choose.  Living in the Jacksonville area gives you a chance to be away from the hustle and bustle of South Florida, while enjoying a slightly milder climate.
